Why walls matter more here than people think
Most of the attention in Houston goes to the attic, and that is usually the right first move. But a wall assembly filled with batts is still a wall full of air paths. Behind every outlet box, along every top and bottom plate, around every plumbing penetration, air moves. On a windy day you can feel it at the baseboard of an exterior wall. In August that air brings heat and water vapor with it.
Foam in the wall cavity is insulation and air sealing at once. There is no gap between the material and the framing, no compression around a wire, no batt tucked in behind a pipe and left thin. The cavity is full, the plane is continuous, and the wall stops breathing.
Add the comfort part: exterior wall surfaces stay closer to room temperature, so the room feels even instead of hot on the west side. Interior partitions filled with open cell cut noise between bedrooms, bathrooms and offices, which is the upgrade homeowners thank us for most often after they move in.
The jobs we do
New construction
We work with builders and owner builders across Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery and Waller counties. Framing inspection passes, rough in is done, we spray, we shave, the drywall crew comes in behind us. On a normal single family house we are in and out in one day, occasionally two if the ceiling and the walls are both in scope.
Additions and second story build outs
Tie in points are where additions leak. We foam the new cavities and pay particular attention to the joint between old and new framing, which is the place a batt crew will always leave open.
Garage conversions
Turning a Houston garage into a room means dealing with a slab, an uninsulated exterior wall and often a shared wall with the house. Closed cell on the exterior wall and open cell on the interior partitions is the combination we use most.
Gut remodels
Once the drywall is off, walls are the cheapest they will ever be to fix. If you are already down to studs, foam is a small percentage of the remodel budget and it changes how the finished house feels.
Metal building interior walls
Shops and barns with framed out interior rooms get closed cell against the steel and open cell in the partitions. See commercial and industrial for the rest of that scope.
2x4 wall: 3.5 inches of open cell, about R-13. 2x6 wall: 5.5 inches, about R-20. Closed cell at 2 inches gives you about R-13 in a 2x4 with a vapor retarder included.
Which foam for a wall
Most residential walls in Houston get open cell. It fills the cavity completely, costs less per square foot, and handles sound better. Closed cell goes in when the wall needs a vapor retarder or when the cavity is shallow and you need every point of R value: exterior walls of a garage conversion, band joists, walls below grade, walls that have flooded before, and anything against steel.
Exterior sheathing type factors in too. If your walls are sheathed with foil faced or foam sheathing, we look at the whole stack before choosing, because two vapor retarders on opposite sides of a cavity is a bad idea. That is the kind of detail we check on the site visit rather than guessing at from the phone.
How we leave the wall
Drywall can usually go up the next morning. Foam is tack free in minutes and fully cured well before your rock arrives.
Scheduling around your trades
Wall foam sits in a tight spot in the build schedule. It goes after electrical, plumbing and HVAC rough in, after framing and rough in inspections pass, and right before drywall. We know that window and we protect it. Tell us your inspection date and we will hold a slot. If your electrician runs late, call us and we will move rather than showing up to a wall that is not ready.
For remodels, we work Monday through Saturday, which helps when a family is living in half the house. Spraying on a Saturday morning and finishing trim by afternoon is a normal week for us.
